Understanding And Way Of Working The Router

To complement the previous post which is about getting to know the difference a Hub, Switch, Bridge and Router, this time I will try to discuss more about Understanding the workings of the Router and the Router in General.

The router is a network device that is used to connect multiple network, either the same or different network in terms of technology such as the use of network topology connecting Bus, Star, and Ring. The router has at least two network interfaces.

In the previous post about getting to know the techniques of subneting has alluded that connections Interfaith network (a network with different IP subnet) can only happen with the help of the Router.

The image above is an example of a router i.e. Mikrotik Rb 750 which is a router with the small size and reasonable price (around 350 thousands) that we can use for the purposes of network connection internet cafe or at home, in the Office.

One of the advantages of the Mikrotik router is located on the ease of configuration and reliability features with a price that is relatively inexpensive. KOQ so promotion:-).

UNDERSTANDING ROUTER

A router is a device that sends data packets through a network or the Internet towards the goal, through a process known as routing. The process of routing occurs at layer 3 (network layer such as Internet Protocol) protocol stack of the seven-layer OSI.

Router serves as a liaison between two or more networks to forward data from one network to another network. Different routers with switches. The switch is connecting multiple devices to form a Local Area Network (LAN).

As an illustration of the difference of the function of routers and switches is a street, and the router is the liaison between the road. Each House is located on the road that have addresses in a particular order. In the same way, a switch connects a wide variety of tools, where each tool has its own IP address in a LAN

The router is very widely used in network based on TCP/IP protocol technology, and it is also called type router with IP Router. In addition to the IP of the Router, there is another AppleTalk Router, and there are still some other router types. The Internet is a prime example of a network that has a lot of IP routers.

The router can be used to connect many small networks into a larger network, called internetwork, or to divide a large network into some subnetwork to improve performance and also simplify management. The router is also sometimes used to connection in two networks that use different media (such as a wireless router in General other than he can connect a computer using radio, he also supports the connection of computers with cable UTP), or different network architecture, such as from Ethernet to Token Ring.

The router can also be used to connect a LAN to a telecommunication services as well as telecommunications leased line or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). The router is used to connect a LAN to a leased line connections such as T1, or T3, is often referred to as the access server.

Meanwhile, the router is used to connect the local network to a DSL connection is also called with the DSL router. Router-router types generally have the function of a firewall is to perform filtering of packets based on source address and destination address of the packet, even though some of the router does not have it.

The router has a feature called packet filtering also with a packet-filtering router. Routers commonly block data traffic transmitted in broadcast so as to prevent the existence of a broadcast storm that is able to slow down the network performance.

THE WORKINGS OF THE ROUTER

The main function of the Router is routing packets (information). A Router has the capability of Routing, which means that the Router can figure out where to intelligently route information (packets) will be passed, whether intended for other hosts that one network or are on a different network.

If packets intended for hosts on a network other then the router will forward it to the network. Conversely, if the packets intended for hosts that one network, then the router will be blocking outgoing packets.

Illustration about the workings of this router can be seen in the picture below:

In the picture above there are 2 network connected to a router. Network on the left which is connected to port 1 of the router has address 192.168.1.0 network and network the right connected to port 2 of the router with the network address 192.155.2.0
  • Computer A sends data to computer C, then the router will not forward this data to another network. Similarly,
  • when the computer sends data F to the E , a router will not forward a data packet to another network.
  • It was only when the computer sends data F to your computer B.
then the router will to the data packets to computer b. so the record of understanding and knows the workings of this router,

may be beneficial.
